The Soundtrack to the Open Road: Why You Need the ‘Lofi Road Trip’ Playlist
November 23, 2020It’s a great pleasure for me that Zazenkai, one of my own musical projects, is now part of Klangspot‘s world of electronic music. Thanks to Matt Fischery, a rising techno producer based in Stuttgart, who made over my ambient music track ‘Ghost Ship‘ in a killer ambient techno banger. Officially listed as a remix, this term doesn’t do justice to the result. Inspired by the abstract soundscapes, Matt brilliantly transformed the atmospheric original into a club-ready techno track. Many thanks for that!
The track is available on Beatport, all streaming & download services:
Of course I recommend to listen to the original as well:
There is a distinct magic that happens when two opposing musical worlds collide. On one side, you have the ethereal, weightless world of Ambient music—designed to calm the mind and slow the pulse. On the other, you have the relentless, driving force of Techno—engineered to accelerate the heart and move the body. With the release of “Ghost Ship (Matt Fischery Remix)”, these two forces meet in a spectacular fashion. Released via Klangspot / Music Advisor Recordings, this track is not just a remix; it is a complete reimagining of what a “Ghost Ship” can sound like.
The Alchemist: Matt Fischery
The original version of “Ghost Ship” by Zazenkai is a piece of pure Ambient music. It is abstract, floating, and meditative—a sonic drifting through the fog. To turn such a track into a “killer Ambient Techno banger” requires more than just adding a kick drum; it requires an alchemist’s touch. Matt Fischery, a rising producer based in Stuttgart, Germany, proves he is up to the task. Known for his darker, more industrial take on electronic music, Fischery takes the delicate soundscapes of the original and encases them in a rigid, rhythmic armor.
The Transformation: As the blog post notes, calling this a “remix” almost feels inadequate. It is a transformation. Fischery takes the “abstract soundscapes” of Zazenkai and uses them as the atmosphere for a club-ready weapon.
The Sound: Imagine a massive vessel moving through dark waters. The pads and textures from the original track provide the fog and the mystery, while Fischery’s percussion provides the engine. The kick is deep and cavernous, echoing like machinery in a hull, driving the track forward with unstoppable momentum.
Zazenkai: The Source Material
Zazenkai is a project deeply rooted in mindfulness and meditation. Usually found on playlists designed for yoga or sleep, Zazenkai’s music is about “letting go.” However, this remix proves that even the most peaceful music has a dark side. By handing the stems over to a techno producer, the “Ghost Ship” is no longer drifting aimlessly; it is now on a collision course. This release highlights the versatility of the Klangspot artist roster, showing that the boundary between “Chillout” and “Rave” is thinner than we think.
A Spotlight on Glói Music
This release also serves as an introduction to Matt Fischery as an artist to watch. Apart from this remix, he is building a catalog of “harder & darker techno” on his own imprint, Glói Music. For listeners who appreciate the more hypnotic, atmospheric side of techno—think Paul Kalkbrenner meets Recondite—this remix is the perfect entry point. It avoids the aggressive, shrill sounds of commercial EDM in favor of mood, tension, and release.
Setting the Scene: When to Listen
This track is too energetic for meditation, but too deep for a pop radio station. It thrives in specific, cinematic moments:
The Late Night Drive: This is the ultimate “Autobahn” track. The steady, driving BPM mimics the rhythm of the road, while the atmospheric synths match the passing lights of the city.
The “Zone” Workout: If you are lifting heavy or running long distances, you need music that is repetitive but engaging. The “hypnotic” quality of Ambient Techno helps you get into the zone and stay there.
The Warm-Up Set: For DJs, this is a secret weapon. It is perfect for bridging the gap between the opening ambient intro of a set and the peak-time energy. It sets a serious, sophisticated tone.
The Verdict
“Ghost Ship (Matt Fischery Remix)” is a testament to the power of collaboration. It takes the soul of Zazenkai and gives it the heart of Matt Fischery. It is dark, driving, and undeniably beautiful.
