In the Scandinavian midwinter, daylight is scarce. The sun barely rises above the horizon, snow settles across Sweden’s forests, and a candle can soften a dark afternoon. That atmosphere runs through “Nu tändas tusen juleljus” (“Now a Thousand Christmas Candles Are Lit”), a Swedish Christmas hymn about light arriving in winter.
Rikard From's "Nu tändas tusen juleljus" is a solo piano arrangement of a traditional Swedish Christmas hymn, originally written by Emmy Kohler in 1898 and often sung for St. Lucia Day on December 13. Released on Klangspot Nu Jazzical, this version offers a quiet, reflective, and intimate interpretation, departing from traditional choir and organ arrangements. From's "Nu Jazzical" style incorporates fuller chords, subtle dissonance, and rubato, creating a more adult, late-night character, complemented by Klangspot's soft, close piano production that evokes a felt piano sound.

Rikard From – Nu Tändas Tusen Juleljus
On his Klangspot Nu Jazzical release, Swedish pianist Rikard From returns to this familiar hymn in a solo piano arrangement. He removes the choir and organ that many listeners associate with the song, leaving the melody room to breathe. The result is quiet Christmas piano music for anyone seeking a break from the louder, busier side of the season.
What is the history of the Swedish Christmas classic 'Nu Tändas Tusen Juleljus'?
Emmy Kohler wrote “Nu tändas tusen juleljus” in 1898. In Sweden, people sing it in schools, homes, and churches, especially for St. Lucia Day on December 13. The festival falls during one of the darkest parts of the year, so its candles, white robes, and songs carry emotional weight alongside their religious tradition.
From treats the song with care without treating it as untouchable. The melody remains immediately recognizable, but his piano arrangement makes it more private and reflective. There is hope in the performance, though not the easy kind. It leaves room for the uncertainty that can accompany a long winter.
Rikard From’s “Nu Jazzical” approach
From’s “Nu Jazzical” style brings classical piano phrasing together with jazz harmony. In this version of “Nu tändas tusen juleljus,” the harmonic changes remain restrained. They place shadows and warmth around the melody without turning the Swedish hymn into a jazz standard.
Traditional arrangements of the hymn often rely on direct tonic, subdominant, and dominant movement. From uses fuller chords and lets dissonance remain for a moment before it resolves. This gives the instrumental Christmas music a more adult, late-night character.
His left hand favors extended chords, including major sevenths and added ninths, rather than plain triads. These notes give the familiar tune a wistful edge. The harmony does not erase the darkness around the candlelight image at the heart of the song. It is a subtle arrangement, and its restraint is central to its effect.
He also uses rubato, or stolen time. A choir needs to move as one body, while a solo pianist can hold back a phrase, pause on a high note, or let a line settle slowly into the next chord. Rather than following a fixed pulse, the rhythm shifts gently from phrase to phrase. These timing changes make the piano version feel present and unforced.
What defines the warm piano recording sound of 'Nu Tändas Tusen Juleljus'?
A bright pop-piano sound would change the mood of this piece completely. Klangspot’s production uses a softer, close piano sound that suits the arrangement’s slow pace. It does not try to make a modest hymn sound enormous. That choice may feel almost too intimate for listeners who prefer glossy holiday production, but it fits the music’s scale.
The felt piano sound
The recording has qualities often associated with a felt piano sound. When a piano’s moderator rail, a strip of felt placed between the hammers and strings, is engaged, it softens the attack of each note. Whether or not that exact method was used here, the performance has the muted, rounded character many listeners connect with felt piano recordings.
Felt absorbs part of the hammer’s sharp initial impact and reduces some higher frequencies. This places more weight on the fundamental pitch and lower harmonics, which listeners often hear as warmth rather than brightness. In a solo piano Christmas arrangement, that softer sound keeps the melody close and prevents the upper register from becoming brittle.
In synthesis terms, felt changes the ADSR envelope: attack, decay, sustain, and release. The attack becomes gentler and less immediate. Its soft edges suit a song about candles better than the abrupt glare of an LED bulb. The comparison is simple, but the sound choice matters. Tone shapes how comfortably a listener can stay with a slow piece.
How is the room captured in the recording of 'Nu Tändas Tusen Juleljus'?
Unlike Christmas recordings covered in artificial cathedral reverb, “Nu tändas tusen juleljus” stays near the instrument. The microphones seem close to the soundboard, or at least close enough to keep the piano action and room audible. There is space around the notes, but it feels like a small human space rather than an invented concert hall.
Small mechanical sounds remain audible. The piano action moves, the damper pedal lifts, and the notes do not disappear into a thick wash of effects. Those details may bother listeners who want a perfectly clean recording, but they suit this performance. They make the track feel physical and close, like someone playing in a wooden room rather than on a distant stage.
A quieter kind of Christmas music
Christmas music is often loud, bright, and relentless. Familiar songs are pushed toward bigger choruses, faster tempos, and more forceful production. Some listeners want that energy. Others prefer slow holiday music that leaves room to rest and does not keep demanding attention.
From’s track belongs to the quieter category.
The tempo remains slow, and the arrangement avoids sudden changes in volume. That steadiness makes it easier to sit with than a busy holiday-pop arrangement. It works as background music for reading, cooking, or an evening at home, while still rewarding close listening through headphones.
As an instrumental, it avoids the sentimental lyrics common in holiday pop. For listeners who know the hymn, the melody may carry memories of Swedish Christmases and past celebrations. New listeners can hear it simply as a calm winter piano piece. There is no commercial gloss directing the listener toward a particular feeling.
The Wishful album
“Nu tändas tusen juleljus” appears on Rikard From’s holiday album “Wishful.” The album focuses on the quieter stretches of Christmas: the early hours before anyone else is awake, the stillness after guests leave, and the pause between seasonal obligations. It does not compete with holiday radio, and it does not need to.
From brings his Nordic background and jazz training to music that accepts winter’s cold while noticing the warmth people create for themselves. That tension gives the album its character. The music is not cheerful at every moment, but it is not bleak either. It sounds patient.
What is 'Nu Tändas Tusen Juleljus' by Rikard From about?
“Nu tändas tusen juleljus” by Rikard From is a solo piano reading of a Swedish Christmas hymn about candles in winter. Its pauses, softened piano tone, and altered harmonies bring forward details that choir arrangements can pass over. The melody remains familiar, but the feeling is more solitary.
It suits St. Lucia celebrations, Christmas Eve reading, or any evening when holiday noise has become too much. Put on the track, light a candle if you like, and give the piano a few uninterrupted minutes. This is Scandinavian Christmas music that asks for attention quietly and reveals its detail over time.
