It’s time for another “Melodic Beats” playlist takeover. This week, Berlin-based DJ and producer Niko Schwind has selected the music.

The previous guest takeover came from Fritz Kalkbrenner at the beginning of the Corona crisis. Since then, the “Melodic Beats” Spotify playlist had been quiet, without special editions or artist-curated selections. I am happy to bring the format back with Niko Schwind, whose melodic house and techno productions have appeared in Klangspot playlists for years.

How did this Niko Schwind playlist takeover come about? I regularly revisit the tracks in my playlists. Some disappear after a few weeks, while others remain because they still work after repeated listens. Niko Schwind’s music has stayed in several Klangspot playlists for a long time. When he releases something new, I often replace an older track with it rather than removing him entirely.

My Last.fm profile makes the point even clearer. I have listened to a lot of Niko Schwind over the years, and I am a Niko Schwind fan 🙂 That is not because every release follows the same formula. His catalog has enough range to fit different moments of the day while keeping a recognizable character.

Niko grew up in Trier and has lived in Berlin for several years. He is closely connected to the Berlin label Stil vor Talent, where much of his work has found a home. His debut album, The Autistic Disco, arrived ten years ago. Since then, he has released singles, EPs, remixes, and collaborations that move between melodic techno, deep house, indie dance, and more restrained electronic music.

Some Niko Schwind tracks are built for a late club set. The drums have weight, the bass lines keep moving, and the melodies unfold gradually rather than demanding attention immediately. Other productions are quieter and more open, with soft percussion, organic textures, and occasional ethnic influences that never feel decorative. That contrast keeps me returning to his music. It works in a DJ set, on headphones during a walk, or on a slow Sunday morning.

For this “Melodic Beats” Spotify playlist takeover, Niko selected instrumental electronic music with a patient, detailed feel. The tracklist combines his own productions with music from Dominik Eulberg, Andhim, Budakid, CIOZ, Oliver Koletzki, and Secret Factory. There is a clear connection between the selections, but the playlist never feels overly tidy. It moves through warm melodic house, minimal rhythms, leftfield electronic sounds, and melodic techno without forcing every track into the same mood.

The selection also gives the playlist a steady flow. Individual tracks have room to establish their own rhythm and texture, while the transitions between styles feel natural. It is a focused instrumental sequence, but not a narrowly defined one. That makes it suitable for attentive listening as much as for a long walk, an afternoon at home, or the quieter stretch before a night out.

Niko Schwind, Felix Raphael, and “Planets”

Niko’s newest release is another collaboration with Felix Raphael. Their earlier track, Circles, came out a few months ago. Their new song, Planets, was released today on the second part of the 15-year Stil vor Talent compilation series.

“Planets” has a steady dance groove, but it never rushes. Warm chords sit beneath Felix Raphael’s vocal, and the arrangement leaves enough space for the song to breathe. It is a vocal electronic track rather than an instrumental one, so Niko did not include it in this takeover. That choice makes sense: “Melodic Beats” is an instrumental Spotify playlist, and these selections stay focused on atmosphere, rhythm, and melody without vocals taking the lead.

The contrast between “Planets” and the takeover tracklist also makes the playlist’s approach clearer. The Felix Raphael collaboration places the vocal at the center, while Niko’s selection follows the details around it: percussion, bass movement, synth lines, and the patient development of a groove. Both sides belong to the same melodic electronic world, but they serve different listening situations.

I have not met Niko in person yet. Still, his track selection gives the same impression as his releases: curious, relaxed, and serious about music without becoming overly serious. He seems like someone with whom you could have a beer and spend hours discussing records, club nights, and whatever else comes up.
