Winter changes the sound of a piano. Cold air can sharpen its edges, while a close recording still holds warmth. On Rikard From’s new solo piano single “Get Me Through December”, the instrument carries the entire piece with patience, stillness, and no need to hurry.

Rikard From – Get Me Through December
At just under five minutes, “Get Me Through December” moves between memory and the present. The track is in E major and has a gentle 94 BPM pulse, though its phrasing often feels slower. **Rikard From** brings together elements of neoclassical piano music and jazz improvisation without settling fully into either. Released through Klangspot Nu Jazzical as the first single from the forthcoming album Wishful, it introduces an intimate approach shaped by tone, timing, and silence.
What are the characteristics of the piano sound in 'Get Me Through December'?
The piano arrives with a close, natural sound. Felt, pedal noise, and a trace of room ambience remain audible, keeping the recording grounded in the physical instrument rather than smoothing it into something weightless. Its spectral profile around 790 Hz points to a rounded tone with little brittle high end. Hammer attack and the wood of the piano can be heard, but neither dominates the performance.
Each phrase has time to settle. The left hand creates a soft pulse instead of a fixed rhythmic pattern, while the right hand shapes melodies that feel spontaneous without losing direction. A tempo reading of 187 BPM can be misleading here. In practice, this winter piano piece feels reflective and unhurried, closer to a half-time motion than to a fast jazz performance.
How does E major contribute to the winter light mood in the music?
E major gives the music an open, clear colour. Chopin and Keith Jarrett have both used the key for music that can hold brightness and melancholy in the same space. From uses that contrast as a seasonal image: thin December light through grey clouds, welcome for a moment but never entirely cheerful.
The harmony avoids dramatic turns. Chords arrive without pushing toward a climax, and occasional modal changes bring in a restrained jazz colour. The emotional direction remains plainspoken: reflection, gratitude, and a decision to continue through a difficult month.
Between neoclassical music and jazz
“Get Me Through December” sits between neoclassical solo piano and jazz phrasing, two areas Rikard From has explored for years. The right-hand melody has something of Brad Mehldau’s inward, searching quality. Sparse left-hand harmony recalls Erik Satie, while the economy of the arrangement brings parts of Ólafur Arnalds’ piano work to mind.
Still, the track sounds like From rather than an exercise in reference points. His touch is precise without becoming rigid. He stretches the timing when a line needs more breath, then lets the next chord arrive late enough to register. Nothing feels overworked.
How do dynamics convey feeling in Rikard From's piano piece?
Technical analysis gives the track a low RMS value of 0.09, leaving room for real changes in volume. Many compressed releases flatten these differences. Here, the quieter passages stay quiet, while fuller chords expand naturally rather than simply becoming louder.
Those shifts carry much of the song’s feeling. When From leans into a chord, a brief warmth passes through the cooler mood. When he pulls back, silence becomes part of the composition. The pauses are not empty. They give the last note time to remain present.
What is the mood of Rikard From's album 'Wishful'?
The forthcoming Rikard From album Wishful is not a conventional Christmas record. Its quiet instrumental pieces address hope, healing, and memory instead of seasonal spectacle. “Get Me Through December” introduces that mood with acceptance. It does not try to manufacture holiday cheer.
There are no flashy passages or grand gestures. This is reflective piano music that leaves room for time, loss, and renewal. That restraint may not suit listeners looking for a dramatic holiday soundtrack, but it suits the title’s modest, personal request.
Why is 'Get Me Through December' considered a confession, not a carol?
Unlike many seasonal piano releases, “Get Me Through December” has no bells, strings, or borrowed phrases from Christmas standards. It does not use nostalgia as a shortcut. Its impact comes from how little it asks of the listener and how little it adds as decoration.
The song has the private feeling of sitting by a window with a warm mug while snow falls outside. The title does not sound desperate. “Get me through” reads as a modest wish, something said quietly after a long day rather than a plea for rescue.
Production
The recording keeps small mechanical sounds, felt resonance, and pedal movement in the mix. These details give the performance a physical presence. The production has depth without heavy reverb, so the piano remains clear and the room around it stays audible.
Spectral data places the bandwidth at about 2050 Hz, giving the recording a broad tonal range and an open piano character. It suggests a grand piano captured with minimal microphone placement and natural room acoustics. That approach fits a quiet winter instrumental: close enough to hear the player, but not so close that the room disappears.

Rikard From’s understated playing
A restrained quality runs through Rikard From’s music. His playing is lyrical and understated without becoming cold. The phrasing feels conversational, as if he were playing beside the listener rather than performing at them. In a solo piano recording, where every pause is exposed, that difference matters.
In “Get Me Through December,” From places a familiar winter feeling inside five minutes of instrumental piano. There are no lyrics and no extra ornaments. The same measured approach appears in his earlier compositions and live performances, where melody and touch do most of the work.
Klangspot Nu Jazzical and hybrid music
The sublabel Klangspot Nu Jazzical releases music between jazz, classical, and ambient forms. Wishful fits naturally within that catalogue. The album is not festive in a commercial sense. Instead, it treats winter and the holiday period as a time when memories surface and quieter music can feel appropriate.
This is modern instrumental music with a cinematic sense of space, a warm piano tone, and no pressure to oversell its emotions.
How does 'Get Me Through December' evoke 'light through the frost'?
“Get Me Through December” never raises its voice. It remains close to the piano, sustained chords, and pauses between phrases. Rather than decorating December, it follows the month at its slower pace.
Each fading resonance asks for attention. The music finds its beauty in careful listening rather than excess.
As the year grows quieter, Rikard From’s “Get Me Through December” leaves room to feel what is already there and to listen a little longer.
