"Black Forest" by Kasiedeo and Bent Johanson is a deep ambient and drone track released on Klangspot Recordings, designed to evoke the atmosphere of Germany's Schwarzwald. The piece offers an electronic approximation of "Shinrin-yoku" or "forest bathing" through its slow, unfolding atmosphere, which avoids sudden interruptions and uses synthesizer textures to suggest organic spaces. It achieves this by building layers with a deep, resonant drone in the sub-bass range (below 60 Hz) as its foundation, complemented by soft pads that evoke light passing through branches. This composition creates a continuous, open environment that allows listeners to settle into a meditative state, distinguishing it from pop production that often fills every second with detail.
Some music seems made for crowded streets, flashing signs, and a pulse that never settles. Other records move at the pace of a place with no timetable. On “Black Forest”, Kasiedeo and Bent Johanson take the second route.
Released on Klangspot, the track sits between deep ambient and drone. There are no verses, choruses, or drum patterns. Instead, it unfolds as a slow atmosphere that suggests Germany’s Schwarzwald: dense, shadowed, and quiet. For anyone worn down by alerts and short-form noise, this is music that leaves space to breathe.
Forest bathing through sound
“Black Forest” brings to mind Shinrin-yoku, the Japanese practice usually translated as “forest bathing.” Its premise is simple: spend time in a forest and attend to its atmosphere. Research on time in natural settings has linked it to lower stress markers and changes in mood, though a recording cannot replace being outdoors.
Kasiedeo and Bent Johanson offer an electronic approximation of that experience rather than a literal nature soundtrack. The piece does not rely on field recordings or obvious woodland effects. Its connection to the forest comes through pacing, tone, and the room left between events.
-
The synthesizer textures suggest organic spaces. There are no obvious bird calls or gusts of wind, yet the timbre can recall leaves moving overhead or a distant environmental hum.
-
The track avoids sudden interruptions. With noise-cancelling headphones, its steady pace may make it easier to settle into a meditative listening state. Claims about alpha waves or nervous-system responses vary widely between listeners, but the absence of sharp sounds is plainly part of the record’s appeal.
Roots and canopy in “Black Forest”
Without drums, the texture carries most of the emotional weight. The composition develops in layers, with a low foundation beneath a lighter, more open upper range. Those layers change slowly enough that the track holds together as one continuous environment.
The low end: the roots
A deep, resonant drone sits at the track’s base. In music theory, a sustained underlying note is often called a pedal point. Here, it gives the piece a fixed centre while the surrounding sounds gradually shift.
-
The low rumble may sit in the sub-bass range, below 60 Hz, where sound can be partly felt rather than heard. It has the weight of wet ground or packed earth. That consistency gives the piece a stable floor, which suits quiet work or late-night listening.
The high end: the canopy
Above the drone, soft pads remain suspended in the mix, slowly brightening and receding. Johanson’s cinematic approach gives these higher frequencies the impression of light passing through branches without reducing the track to a familiar woodland scene.
-
Long-decay algorithmic reverb extends the sounds into a broad acoustic field. The result feels open rather than tightly compressed. Where pop production often fills every second with detail, “Black Forest” lets notes trail away and allows silence to remain part of the arrangement.
Kasiedeo and Bent Johanson
Kasiedeo and Bent Johanson bring different instincts to the track, and that contrast keeps the drone from becoming static. Their contributions are subtle, but the tension between repetition and movement gives the piece its shape.
-
Kasiedeo leans into repetition and mantra-like motion. The recurring elements hold the piece in place and keep it from becoming overly busy.
-
Johanson brings gradual harmonic movement. Small chord changes give the drone direction without breaking its stillness. They carry a trace of Fernweh, the German word for longing for faraway places.
Together, they evoke a particular version of the Black Forest: fairytale country, but not a comforting postcard. There is beauty here, alongside mist, depth, and the sense that the woods deserve caution. This is not beachside ambient. It is cooler, darker, and more inward-looking.
Music for concentration and rest
Many people use music to shape a working or resting environment. “Black Forest” suits that purpose because it remains consistent and avoids lyrics, hooks, and rhythmic jolts. It does not demand constant attention, though there is more to follow than in plain background noise.
1. For focused work
Lyrics can interrupt reading, writing, and detailed tasks for some listeners. “Black Forest” offers a continuous texture instead. It may also soften everyday sounds such as air conditioning or traffic, much like pink noise, while staying quiet enough to remain behind the task at hand.
2. For winding down
The track changes gradually and contains no hard percussive hits. That makes it a reasonable choice for an evening routine or for anyone who prefers sound in the room while trying to sleep. It will not solve insomnia, but its pace does not compete with rest.
3. A break from the city
For people surrounded by traffic, concrete, and screens, a record like this can offer a brief change of atmosphere. It is not a substitute for going outside, and it does not need to be. A few minutes with the track can give the imagination somewhere quieter to go.
Darkness as comfort
Dark music is not automatically sad music. On “Black Forest,” Kasiedeo and Bent Johanson treat darkness as shelter, closer to a heavy blanket or a dim room than a threat.
The track moves slowly while much of daily life does not. Its patience is the point. Put on headphones, silence the notifications if you can, and let the drone run its course. The piece does not ask for much. It asks you to stay still long enough to hear it.
