What are the realities of running an independent music label?
Letโs talk honestly about the music business. Klangspot has been part of the music-streaming world for years, first as a music blog and through curated Spotify playlists. In January 2022, I founded Klangspot Recordings and developed that work into an independent music label.
Klangspot now includes four label imprints and an official Apple Music curator account. I also have more ideas in progress: new releases, playlist projects, artist collaborations, and practical ways to support independent musicians without reducing every conversation to numbers.
I enjoy building playlists, finding new artists, and helping strong songs reach listeners who may genuinely connect with them. That remains the reason I do this. Spotify playlist curation, Apple Music curation, and independent label work can be rewarding when everyone involved treats one another fairly.
There is also a less pleasant side to streaming. Playlist placement can matter to an artist, especially for an independent release without a major-label budget. More streams may lead to followers, saves, algorithmic recommendations, and opportunities around future releases. I understand why artists want that. I also understand why a Spotify playlist curator receives messages from people under pressure to make their next single perform.
But a playlist is not a shortcut to a music career. It should not be the only reason someone gets in touch.
Klangspot is a one-person music project
A quick reminder: Klangspot and everything connected to it are a one-man show. It will probably remain that way.
I have worked with people on Spotify playlists, music production, release planning, and other projects. Some collaborations have gone well, and I expect there will be more. The right people can improve a release. A producer may hear something in a track that the artist missed. A designer can give an EP a visual identity. A reliable partner can make the workload easier to manage.
Still, I often approached this work too naively. I assumed that a shared enthusiasm for music would be enough. It is not always enough.
Unlike many people working around the music industry, I see Klangspot mainly as a passion rather than a conventional business. That does not mean I ignore the costs, time, or practical work behind a label release. Music distribution, artwork, playlist maintenance, artist communication, social posts, metadata, and release schedules all require time and attention. But I did not start Klangspot to chase every possible stream or turn artists into statistics on a dashboard.
That attitude can create problems.
I have a full-time job and a family, so my time for music is limited. The hours I spend on Klangspot usually come late in the evening, early in the morning, or when I could be doing something else. I make that choice because music matters to me. What frustrates me is seeing that time wasted on people who never intended to build a proper working relationship.
- People come to me with great ideas, then stop replying after a short time.
- Some only care about the streams they can get through my playlists.
- Others only want access to my experience.
- Some people seem to forget who I am once they think they are โfamous,โ even though I supported them for a long time.
None of this is unusual in the independent music scene. Artists are busy. Labels are busy. Everyone has deadlines, day jobs, financial pressure, and more messages than they can answer. I do not expect perfect communication, and I do not need constant attention. A late reply is not a betrayal.
The issue is a pattern of one-sided contact. Someone writes with enthusiasm, asks for feedback on a song, wants help with a release strategy, or asks how to pitch music to Spotify playlists. You spend time listening, replying, explaining, and trying to help. Then that person disappears as soon as the conversation no longer benefits them.
Once they get what they want, or you ask for a small favor in return, they disappear. The message is often clear: โI do not get a playlist placement? Then I donโt give a shit how you are doing.โ I am done giving free advice and favors to everyone.
Why is playlist placement not a substitute for a genuine relationship?
There is nothing wrong with asking a music curator to consider a song. Artists should pitch their releases, explain their sound, and contact playlists that suit their audience. That is part of independent music promotion. A thoughtful pitch can start a useful conversation.
Sending a generic message to dozens of playlist curators and expecting a guaranteed placement, however, is not a strategy. Neither is treating every curator, blogger, label owner, producer, or promoter as a tool for growth.
I listen to music because I want to find tracks worth sharing. Sometimes a song fits a Klangspot playlist. Sometimes it does not. That decision depends on the playlist mood, the existing selection, the production, the song itself, and whether it makes sense for listeners. It is never a personal promise, and it should not become an argument.
A good independent artist relationship has balance. People reply when they say they will. They are honest when plans change. They understand that support works both ways. That sounds basic, but it is rare enough to matter.
I know plenty of people in the music business do a better job than I do. Some have more time, bigger networks, stronger marketing skills, or more experience with label services and streaming promotion. I can live with that, even though I try to improve every day. There is always more to learn about music distribution, artist development, playlist pitching, and audience-building.
Still, I would rather work alone in the third division than work with unreliable people who think they belong in the first.
How can one choose better music collaborations?
From now on, I will be much more careful about who I work with. My time matters. So does the time of everyone who genuinely supports Klangspot, the artists on its releases, and the playlists that have grown over the years.
This does not mean I have lost my passion for music. I still want to hear new records. I still enjoy discovering a track with a strong melody, an unusual idea, or a mood that stays with me after it ends. I still want Klangspot Recordings to release music that deserves attention.
But I have learned that the music business often puts numbers ahead of people. Streams matter. Followers matter. Playlist reach matters. They can help artists continue making music, and pretending otherwise would be silly. Yet numbers do not tell me whether someone is reliable, respectful, or worth working with over time.
It took me a while to accept that. For me, the person and a friendly partnership still come first. I would rather build slowly with people who communicate clearly than chase short-term streaming results with people who vanish when they no longer need something.
If you only want to build sandcastles or get a playlist placement, I will ignore you. Stay away from me. If you want to work together as a real partner and are willing to put in the extra effort, I am open to many things. And yes, people come before numbers.
