What is the new chapter for De-Phazz, introducing 'Overdub Overdo' and 'In A Rudie Mood'?
De-Phazz has built its career on combinations that might seem awkward on paper but rarely sound that way: lounge music, sampled electronics, swing jazz, dub, and weighty grooves. The group’s working motto still sums up its approach: “Bringing together what doesn’t necessarily belong together!”.
That instinct has taken the German group through trip-hop, experimental pop, jazz, and electronic music without making its records feel interchangeable. The new De-Phazz single, “Overdub Overdo,” introduces the forthcoming album In A Rudie Mood. Producer Pit Baumgartner and co-producer and drummer Oli Rubow lead the recording. The album arrives on September 18, 2026.
“Overdub Overdo” does not recreate vintage reggae or dub note for note. Instead, it folds those traditions into a distinctly De-Phazz arrangement: playful, slightly unruly, and precisely constructed. For listeners drawn to reggae jazz fusion, electronic dub, or lounge-inflected reggae, the single offers a clear indication of where In A Rudie Mood is headed.
The sound of “Overdub Overdo”
“Overdub Overdo” opens with Caribbean reggae rhythms filtered through De-Phazz‘s idea of “Rude German Sampling”. Dub reverb opens up the rhythm section, allowing notes to linger. The arrangement avoids an obvious retro-dub approach, though. It feels warm and loose on first listen, while its production stays exact and contemporary.
The track takes shape through acoustic instruments placed within an electronic dub production. Each part has a clear role rather than serving as decoration:
-
A driving ukulele sits in the middle of the mix with a bright, percussive pulse. Beneath it, the bass remains low, rounded, and steady, giving the reggae groove its weight.
-
Jona Heckmann plays trombone lines with grit and warmth. The brass roughens the edges of the programmed passages, a familiar part of De-Phazz‘s electronic jazz approach.
-
Tobias Escher threads accordion phrases through the mix. The instrument gives the song an off-centre tone that is unusual in lounge reggae and makes the arrangement less predictable.
These details keep the single in motion. A listener may notice the ukulele first, then the dub echo, then an accordion phrase slipping between the beat and the brass. The parts do not align too neatly, and that slight friction suits the song.
Who are the people behind the groove of De-Phazz's 'Overdub Overdo'?
The vocalists are Eez, the duo of Eben Jones and Emily Zils. Their voices give “Overdub Overdo” a melodic centre without smoothing away its odd corners. Their phrasing is soulful, rhythmic, and close to the beat, while the backing moves between dub, reggae fusion, jazz colour, and sampled electronics.
As co-producer, Oli Rubow brings a loose, responsive drumming style to the recording. His drums push against the synths, guitars, and brass before answering them, rather than simply marking time. Pit Baumgartner handled programming and arrangement, drawing on what he calls the group’s creative “kitchen”. In Baumgartner’s description, musicians such as Jona Heckmann and Alex Weis add their own “flavorful spices” to the mix.
The kitchen metaphor fits because the record does not treat collaboration as a tidy division of labour. Baumgartner sets the framework, but the players leave their marks on it. Rubow’s drums keep the groove human, while the guest instruments stop the programming from becoming too polished.
The idea behind the “Rudies”
Pit Baumgartner uses “Rudies” for the meeting of Caribbean rhythms and dub techniques with what he calls “Western” beats. It describes the musical direction of In A Rudie Mood, rather than a fixed genre label. That distinction matters because De-Phazz has never remained in a single category for long.
The group treats music as something that travels and changes. Caribbean rhythms reached England decades ago and later moved through other parts of Europe in new forms. De-Phazz brings those histories into its own arrangements without suggesting that their origins disappear. That tension runs through “Overdub Overdo”: the song borrows freely without pretending that reggae, dub, and German electronic music are the same thing. In the band’s words, it is “ready to be mixed up.” The full album arrives in September.
How is De-Phazz's album 'In A Rudie Mood' shaped by collaboration and history?
In A Rudie Mood brings collaborators from different generations into the same recording process. De-Phazz retains its familiar blend of jazz, lounge, dub, and electronics, while giving Oli Rubow, Eben Jones, and Emily Zils room to test ideas and shape the material.
The De-Phazz album also includes longtime associates. Andrew Murphy returns with his connection to dub reggae, while Joo Kraus brings the “jazz blue” tone associated with his playing. Oliver Leicht of the Frankfurt Radio Big Band also appears on the record. These names suit a project built around contrast. De-Phazz places musicians with different habits in the same room and lets those differences remain audible.
The result may appeal to listeners familiar with the band’s earlier work, as well as those arriving through contemporary dub, German electronic jazz, or reggae-influenced downtempo music. It is not a nostalgia record. Its reference points are older, but its construction is current.

Why is De-Phazz's 'Overdub Overdo' a track that keeps moving across genres?
For longtime De-Phazz listeners, and for anyone drawn to reggae, jazz, lounge music, and electronic dub, “Overdub Overdo” offers a direct introduction to the next record. The De-Phazz reggae dub single does not stay within one genre for long. That restlessness is part of its appeal.
The track invites listeners to follow the groove and leave rigid genre rules behind. It is a “Melange,” built from styles that rub against each other productively. In his notes for the album, Pit Baumgartner writes: “Pick your favorite bastard!”. “Overdub Overdo” is out now, with In A Rudie Mood following on September 18, 2026.
De-Phazz still finds a place for dub, jazz, electronics, and the occasional instrument that seems unlikely on paper but lands exactly where it should.
