Cisza by Alexej Tarassow is a neoclassical piano track released by 0711 Piano, characterized by its minimalist composition and the use of a felt piano technique for a muted, intimate sound. The Polish title, meaning "silence" or "stillness," reflects the piece's emphasis on the spaces between notes and its largely pianissimo dynamics. This introspective work avoids expansive production, instead inviting close listening to its soft, warm tone and subtle physical presence. Alexej Tarassow's "Cisza" embodies a quiet, reflective sensibility, allowing stillness to be an integral part of the music.
Silence is not empty. Sometimes it is where an answer has time to arrive.
Music is often described through melody, harmony, and rhythm, but the spaces between notes matter too. A pause lets the listener breathe, while quiet gives an emotion time to settle before the next phrase. That is especially true in slow neoclassical piano music built on restraint rather than momentum.
On โCisza,โ neoclassical composer Alexej Tarassow writes for the space between sounds.
Released by 0711 Piano, this solo piano track keeps its arrangement spare. Its Polish title means โsilence,โ and the recording avoids expansive production effects in favour of a close, unadorned piano sound. It asks for attention without demanding it. In a crowded room, this quiet piano music may recede; played alone, it becomes more persuasive.
The title brings linguistic and cultural associations, while the recording draws on the muted colour of a felt piano. Together, those choices explain why โCiszaโ works best when the listener can give it a few undisturbed minutes.
What โCiszaโ means
The title sets the tone. โCiszaโ (pronounced chee-sha) is the Polish word for silence, quiet, or stillness.
-
In English, โsilenceโ can imply absence or a void. โCiszaโ can also suggest calm: a library at rest, a forest after snowfall, or the easy quiet between old friends. That broader meaning suits this minimalist piano composition, which does not treat every pause as a problem to solve.
-
Polish and Eastern European music has long been associated with melancholy and introspection, as heard in composers such as Chopin and Gรณrecki. Tarassowโs piece sits near that sensibility without imitating it. He allows stillness to remain part of the music rather than treating it as a gap that needs filling.
The sound of felt piano
โCiszaโ uses the close, muted character associated with felt piano recordings. The sound is soft without becoming indistinct. Each note retains a small physical presence.
1. Production details
Pop piano is often bright, compressed, and percussive. In โCisza,โ the tone is softer and warmer, with less attack at the beginning of each note.
-
A strip of soft felt between the piano hammers and strings reduces the sharp impact of each strike. This familiar felt piano technique gives the instrument a muted, cushioned voice.
-
Because the notes are quiet, the microphones sit close to the instrument. That proximity catches wood creaks, pedal movement, and fingers leaving the keys. The recording leaves those sounds in place, making the performance feel nearby, as if Tarassow were playing in the next room rather than behind studio glass.
2. A minimalist composition
The piece follows a simple minimalist structure, though simplicity does not make it empty.
-
The left hand maintains a slow, steady pulse that gives the solo piano piece its footing. It does not push towards a dramatic peak.
-
The right hand carries a sparse melody. Tarassow lets notes fade before moving into the next phrase, so the quiet appears to answer the piano. Here, silence belongs to the arrangement rather than merely surrounding it.
3. Pianissimo dynamics
The track remains largely in the range of pianissimo, or very soft playing.
-
Its smaller details require close listening, which makes it less suited to vacuuming, conversation, or a noisy commute. Played quietly at home, however, โCiszaโ can accompany a room without taking it over.
Alexej Tarassowโs neoclassical piano work
Alexej Tarassow writes within the neoclassical piano tradition, favouring restraint, slow pacing, and intimate recorded sound.
-
Earlier releases such as โLatoโ (Summer) and โZimaโ (Winter) use the seasons as emotional frames. โCiszaโ continues that thread, although its attention turns inward rather than towards a particular season or scene.
-
0711 Piano releases intimate piano music, and โCiszaโ fits naturally within that catalogue. Its arrangement rewards focused listening more than background play, though some listeners may still use it while reading or resting.
An interior setting
If Tarassowโs seasonal pieces suggest physical places, โCiszaโ suggests an internal season: a period of waiting, recovery, reflection, or simply less noise.
-
It brings to mind an empty room in an old house, dust moving through a narrow strip of light, and the outside world softened by closed windows. The image is private rather than dramatic.
-
It also recalls the wintry mood of โZimaโ: snow across an open field, with sound absorbed by the ground. The feeling is isolated without necessarily being lonely. There is a difference between solitude and loneliness, and โCiszaโ leaves room for both readings.
Listening as a quiet practice
โCiszaโ is music first. Still, its unhurried pace may suit listeners looking for a calmer soundtrack during difficult, crowded, or overstimulating moments.
1. Grief and reflection
Silence often accompanies grief, particularly when language begins to feel thin or inadequate.
-
When words are not enough, a restrained piano piece can give feelings somewhere to settle. โCiszaโ is melancholy without becoming heavy-handed. It may suit crying, thinking, or sitting still with no task to complete. It does not try to solve sadness, which may be part of why it feels honest.
2. Reading
The track can sit beside a book without constantly demanding attention.
-
Its slow tempo and lack of a catchy hook make it a reasonable companion for reading poetry, Russian fiction, or any text that benefits from patience. Some readers will prefer complete silence, and that is fair. This quiet instrumental piano track is subtle enough that the choice remains with the listener.
3. After a noisy day
Phones, traffic, work calls, and conversation can leave the mind tired of sound.
-
Playing โCiszaโ on the way home or after closing the door for the evening may mark a transition out of that noise. It does not erase stress, but its low volume and measured pace can make the move into a quieter evening feel less abrupt.
Related artists
Tarassowโs approach has points of contact with several artists associated with modern neoclassical and ambient piano:
-
Nils Frahmโs โAmbreโ is closely associated with the felt piano sound. Tarassow shares some of its muted warmth, though โCiszaโ moves with greater reserve and leaves more air around its phrases.
-
Hania Rani, another Polish pianist and composer, also writes spacious piano music. The connection is one of mood and pacing rather than direct imitation.
-
Joep Bevingโs gentle piano work offers another useful comparison. Both artists use simple phrases and leave space for the listenerโs response, although their melodic habits differ.
Silence in the arrangement
In a culture full of competing sounds, Alexej Tarassow plays quietly.
โCiszaโ takes a restrained approach to solo piano music. Its pauses are deliberate, and the low dynamics leave little room for spectacle. That will not appeal to everyone. Listeners looking for a strong melodic release or cinematic build may find the track too reserved. For those who want less noise, its patience is the point.
The piece suggests that silence does not always need to be feared, explained, or filled.
