Andrej Meyer's "Chroma," released on Music Advisor Recordings, is a melodic acid techno track that blends a TB-303-style acid line with warmer melodic movements and layered synthesizers. The title "Chroma" refers to the chromatic spectrum in sound, where each element is crafted to represent a different hue in the auditory palette, moving beyond the idea that techno must be monochrome. This track combines a firm club beat, typically around 124-128 BPM, with spacious synth layers, offering both dancefloor pressure and rewarding detail for attentive listening. Klangspot Recordings highlights how Meyer gives harmony space alongside rhythm, allowing the synthesizer to carry melody, tension, and texture.
Techno is often associated with concrete rooms, strobe lights, and machine-led repetition. Yet melody has always had a place within the genre. On “Chroma,” Andrej Meyer builds on an acid techno foundation, bringing in warmer melodic movement without losing the pressure needed for a club system.
On the single “Chroma,” electronic producer Andrej Meyer works with colour, movement, and closely shaped synth tones. The track sits between melodic techno and acid techno, with details that become clearer on repeated listens.
Released on Music Advisor Recordings, a sister label in the Klangspot family, “Chroma” combines a TB-303-style acid line, layered synthesizers, and a steady electronic rhythm. The Roland TB-303 is closely associated with acid house, rave music, and early techno, but Meyer uses its elastic, resonant character in a more melodic setting.
The track pairs its acid sequence with spacious synth layers and a firm club beat. It carries enough weight for a late-night techno set, while still rewarding attention away from the dancefloor. The melodies give the rhythm direction without softening its momentum.
The meaning of “Chroma”
The title “Chroma” comes from the Greek word for colour. In music theory, the chromatic scale contains all twelve pitches, making the name a natural fit for a track shaped by changing tones and shifting harmonic shades.
For Andrej Meyer, the title refers to the role each sound plays in the arrangement rather than a fixed visual concept.
-
“It’s a reflection of the chromatic spectrum in sound – each element carefully crafted to represent a different hue in the auditory palette,” says Meyer.
-
“Chroma” moves beyond the assumption that techno must remain monochrome or purely functional. Meyer gives harmony space beside the rhythm. The synthesizer carries melody, tension, and texture rather than acting as percussion alone. The arrangement changes tone and intensity in measured steps instead of relying on abrupt drops.
How “Chroma” is built
“Chroma” brings an acid sound into clean, modern techno production. Its character comes from the tension between a restless bassline below, softer melodic material above, and drums that keep both elements in motion.
1. The acid line
The acid bassline drives the track and gives this melodic acid techno release its bite.
-
The line has the familiar squelch, glide, and resonance associated with the TB-303 sound, whether Meyer used original hardware, a software instrument, or another emulation. It has the physical, slightly unstable character listeners expect from acid techno.
-
Rather than leaning into the chaotic dissonance heard on some 1990s acid records, Meyer keeps the sequence melodic. Slow adjustments to the cutoff frequency and resonance take it from a low growl towards a brighter lead sound. The pattern does not remain fixed in a loop. It changes shape while the rhythm stays steady.
2. The melodic layers
Synth pads sit above the acid line and soften some of its sharper frequencies.
-
These wide, reverb-heavy pads provide much of the track’s emotional pull. The bassline maintains momentum, while the pads leave room around the beat. That contrast places “Chroma” near the melodic techno sound associated with artists such as Tale Of Us and Ben Böhmer, though the acid sequence leaves it rougher around the edges.
3. The rhythm
The drums are direct and club-focused. They do not compete for attention, which allows the synth work to breathe.
-
The track appears to sit around 124-128 BPM, a melodic techno tempo range that provides drive without rushing the melodic changes. The kick remains firm in the mix but does not bury the acid line or pads. For DJs, that restraint can make it useful between tougher techno and more atmospheric records.
Andrej Meyer
Andrej Meyer approaches techno through sound design and an interest in vintage synthesizer character. “Chroma” makes that approach easy to hear. The notes matter, but so does the way each note changes over time.
-
His production gives timbre as much attention as melody. On “Chroma,” much of the feeling comes from the acid line’s changing texture: filter movement, resonance, and the shifting relationship between bassline and pads all shape the mood.
-
Meyer’s sound draws on rave-era acid music while retaining the clarity associated with current electronic production. The TB-303 language introduces a sense of nostalgia, but the record does not attempt to copy an old acid house track. Its low end is cleaner, and its emotional arc develops gradually.
Melodic acid techno
Melodic acid techno uses the expressive movement of acid synthesis in tracks led by harmony, atmosphere, and repetition. It can retain the tension of a classic 303 sequence without turning every phrase towards distortion or abrasion.
-
Acid house emerged in the 1980s with a raw, stripped-back sound built around the Roland TB-303. Its sliding notes, resonant filter sweeps, and repeating patterns became part of the genre’s identity.
-
Many electronic music producers now use the same acid sound for melodic writing. “Chroma” follows that route. It retains the TB-303-style character while melody and atmosphere carry much of the track’s emotional weight. The record suits headphones as well as a dark club room, although each setting brings out different details.
Where “Chroma” fits
“Chroma” changes character depending on where and how it is played. Its steady structure makes it practical, while its tonal details keep it from feeling purely functional.
1. A late club set
For DJs, it can work as a transition record in a late-night techno set.
-
It has enough force to maintain momentum, while its melody can ease a move from harder techno towards more trance-leaning or melodic material. It is not an all-out peak-time tool. That middle ground can be useful when a set needs tension without a full reset.
2. Focused work
The repetition may also suit listeners who concentrate well with instrumental electronic music in the background.
-
The acid loop creates a consistent pattern that can sit behind coding, design work, writing, or other tasks that benefit from a steady pulse. Filter changes and melodic shifts stop the track from becoming flat. It is focused music, although listeners who need complete silence will understandably feel otherwise.
3. A night drive
The track has a cinematic quality without reaching for oversized drama.
-
Its rhythm fits the motion of driving through a city after dark. Streetlights, passing signs, and the slow rise of the synth line seem to move at a similar pace. The effect is less about escapism than momentum: the beat continues forward as the melodic elements gradually open up.

How does Andrej Meyer bring emotion to techno in “Chroma”?
Techno can sound mechanical by design, but machines can still carry feeling. Andrej Meyer uses that tension effectively on “Chroma,” allowing precise programming and a sense of lift and release to coexist.
“Chroma” takes a familiar acid techno sound and gives it a wider emotional range. The bassline remains physical and insistent. Around it, the synth layers gradually open, changing the mood without interrupting the track’s forward motion.
Listen closely to the resonance changes. Much of the track’s personality lies in the moments when the acid line tightens, brightens, or pulls back.
